The Crew Behind The Uncrewed: Elioenay Pérez

Could you describe briefly what are the main tasks you have to deal with in your day-to-day work in the software development department?

My day-to-day work consists of developing the software necessary for the Flight Control department to easily interact with the system hardware. This includes the development of drivers, the implementation of communication protocols or the provision of essential functions for the correct functioning of our systems. In addition, I perform tests to ensure the correct operation and quality standards of our products.


You are one of the young talents that UAV Navigation-Grupo Oesía has. In your short professional career, which projects or products do you consider as the most important for their impact in the unmanned sector?

One of the most important products in which I have participated is a system that allows to improve positioning and path estimation. This product allows to know the position with centimeter precision, as well as to determine the direction with great accuracy. In addition, it is equipped with several sensors that provide very useful data for the control of the UAV.

This is why I consider this product to be very important in the UAV sector, since knowing precisely and reliably the location and direction of the UAV is crucial to take the necessary navigation and control actions to complete the operation.


In particular we wanted to ask you about your active participation in the research and improvement of our joystick for flight safety and operation support according to the current aeronautical regulations. What would you highlight about the work done?

My participation in the improvements for joystick operation support and flight safety has focused on developing the necessary drivers to implement typical PPM and SBUS protocols in radio transmitters/receivers. This allows our autopilot to be compatible with a wide variety of joysticks, thus adapting to our customers' preferences.

This work is especially important for flight safety, as a reliable joystick is crucial in situations requiring manual intervention or during instruction with customers. The compatibility of our autopilot with multiple joysticks allows further adaptation to the specific needs of our customers, such as the need to connect different joysticks at the same time.

This project was one of my first developments in UAV Navigation-Grupo Oesía and it allowed me to learn in depth the different parts of the software and the structure of our products, giving me a holistic vision of the whole development process.


Excellence is one of the cornerstones in UAV Navigation-Grupo Oesía. You recently obtained the best student award of your bachelor’s degree. What are the keys to obtain a recognition of this category and how do you transfer them to the working world?

I think that the keys to obtain a recognition like this are the passion for what I do, the constant disposition to learn new things and the ability to manage time correctly. It is essential to fulfill all tasks, but without affecting your personal life or rest.

In the working environment, these characteristics have been a great help for me in UAV Navigation-Grupo Oesía. Since I started, I have not stopped learning new things trying to improve my skills and knowledge, something fundamental for my professional development. Passion and curiosity also allow me to approach new challenges and projects with much more enthusiasm and motivation.
