Introduction to Satcom on The Move
Both military and civil operations are getting more and more reliant on Beyond Line of Sight (BLOS) ranges, where conventional communication systems, such as cellular or radio systems, have become inaccessible.
The modern battlefield locations are more remote and rugged than ever, therefore, armies require vehicles with network connectivity. Moreover, depending on the mission, the vehicle, or platform, there is no one solution that fits all different configurations available, so different payloads, bands, and ranges are required to provide the needed level of near real-time and tactically-relevant information. This is where on-the-move space communication based on satellite links, which is called SATCOM (Satellite Communications), is a critical layer in supporting these networks. This is known as SATCOM On The Move (SOTM).
In order to make these links, real antenna pointing and stabilization systems are required as they guarantee direct connection with the satellite and they assure the stability and reliability of the link connection even in the most challenging environments. To ensure the availability and robustness of the link, the antennas require a reliable stream of data containing information about the dynamic state of the platform, which is achieved with an adequate pointing or stabilization solution. This should be acquired using a high-quality data source by means of a compact system with reduced size, capable of surviving sensor failures, and working on both land and maritime environments.
