Military-Certified Autopilots with the MIL-STD 810 & MIL-STD 461

Introduction

In the aerospace and defense sectors, reliability is non-negotiable. The United States Military Standards (MIL-STD), such as MIL-STD-810F and MIL-STD-461F, are globally recognized benchmarks that ensure equipment can withstand the harshest operational environments. UAV Navigation-Grupo Oesía, a trusted leader in flight control solutions for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), has successfully achieved these certifications for its flagship product—the VECTOR autopilot.

This achievement not only validates the ruggedness and reliability of the VECTOR system but also underscores UAV Navigation-Grupo Oesía’s commitment to quality, precision engineering, and readiness to scale production for high-demand, mission-critical applications.

What is MIL-STD Certification and Why Does It Matter?

The United States Military Standard (MIL-STD) certifications are issued by the U.S. Department of Defense to ensure that equipment meets stringent performance and durability standards. These standards are also adopted worldwide by commercial and governmental organizations as a mark of quality and reliability.

The standard is also used by non-defense government organizations and industries as a way of showing that their products meet the criteria.

The VECTOR autopilot has been certified under the following standards:

  • MIL-STD-810F – Environmental Engineering Considerations and Laboratory Tests
  • MIL-STD-461F – Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)

These certifications confirm that the VECTOR is engineered to perform reliably in extreme conditions, making it suitable for both military and high-end commercial UAV applications.

MIL-STD 810F

MIL-STD 810F

MIL-STD-810F defines a series of rigorous environmental tests that simulate the real-world conditions equipment may face during its lifecycle. These include:

  • Vibration and Shock
  • Extreme Temperatures
  • Humidity and Rain
  • Altitude and Acceleration

The VECTOR autopilot underwent comprehensive testing at Spain’s National Institute for Aerospace Technology (INTA), including Vibration Tests (X-axis) and Constant Acceleration Tests (Y-axis).

These tests confirmed that the VECTOR can endure the mechanical and environmental stresses typical of UAV operations in both military and civilian contexts. Notably, the VECTOR passed all tests without requiring any design modifications—an impressive testament to UAV Navigation-Grupo Oesía’s robust design philosophy and stringent quality assurance procedures.

MIL-STD-461F: Electromagnetic Compatibility

MIL-STD-461F ensures that electronic equipment does not emit or succumb to electromagnetic interference. This is critical for UAVs, which rely on precise communication and navigation systems.

The MIL-STD 461F includes all the requirements for the control of Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) characteristics of subsystems and equipment. This standard specifies the different tests needed to guarantee Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and to analyze the EMI of equipment.

The VECTOR autopilot was subjected to E-Field Radiated Emissions Tests (200 MHz – 1 GHz) and Conducted Susceptibility to Damped Sinusoidal Transients.

These tests validate that the VECTOR can operate safely and effectively in electromagnetically noisy environments, such as near radar installations or other electronic warfare systems.
